Charity expands with exciting projects to help peoples’ mental wellbeing

By Jill Dando News

A mental health charity has expanded its projects to boost peoples mental well-being.

Wellspring Counselling, based in Nailsea, North Somerset, UK is expanding its affordable Counselling services to adults and young people.

They have just taken on five extra counsellors and are involved in training four more on the back of £100,000 National Lottery funding.

Due to the pandemic and other social factors, there has been an explosion in numbers across the area desperate for help.

The charity has just seen 40 men attend the MENtal Fitness course at Clevedon Cricket Club with excellent results.

The course will now be rolled out to other sports clubs across Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Portishead.

The charity has been going for 28 years with 22 counsellors and now new CEO Wendy Griffen is expanding its reach with new services to help young and old.

Already this year over 2000 one-to-one counselling sessions have been carried out but the numbers are expected to go up under the demand.

Wendy has been a counsellor for 10 Years and recently did a Masters Dissertation on the impact of social media on young people’s mental health.

She said: “There is no doubt that mental health issues are now a national crisis and we are seeing this across the South West.

“We are looking to boost our services to help people in any way we can but there is no doubt that the problems are going to get far worse.

“It’s the pace of life, struggles over bills, the state of the world as well as the huge effects of the pandemic including so much loss.”

She added: “Taking on the role of Director at Wellspring Counselling 6 months ago has been the highlight of my career and an absolute privilege.

“Wellspring was originally set up in 1994 by people who wanted to support those around who were struggling with life. We now want to carry that on but expand it to cope with others who are at crisis point in so many ways.  In order to provide affordable but professional counselling, we rely on the generous grants from funders and donations from the public.”

Other initiatives include:

  • Carers’ Workshops for unpaid carers in North Somerset to receive support and tips with their demanding roles
  • Courses for people who struggle psychologically with their weight and their relationship with food
  • Groups for young people who struggle with anxiety, gender issues and eating disorders.
  • The charity has strong links to GP surgeries, churches, schools, and the wider community.

The charity has a friendly admin team so people can chat to via phone or email to find out about the support we offer.

The office is open Monday 1.30-4.30pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9.30am-4.30 pm.
