The stunning Guide Dogs for the Blind charity has had a colossal number of applications to volunteer, with a record-breaking more than 4,500 people stepping forward.

It follows a story by BBC correspondent Sean Diley, of his beloved black lab Sammy who retired from being a guide dog after 8 years’ service.

After filming their final walk together to show the devastating impact of losing a guide dog, he may now have to wait two years for a new dog, and however good they may be, nobody can replace the character of a dog.

Post-pandemic, guide dog partnerships in the UK had decreased from around 5,000 to 4,000 because puppy breeding was halted for staff and owner’s safety. Sammy is now living with Sean’s mother for his retirement.
