Good news on planet Earth’s ozone layer, UN finds

It is terrific news for our planet as we enter 2023.

The UN has discovered that most of the atmospheric layer protecting us from ultraviolet radiation will be fully recovered for most of the world by 2040.

The hole in the Earth’s ozone layer is on course to be completely healed over most of the world 20 years.

The ozone was once the most feared environmental peril facing humanity,

But following decisive action by governments to phase out ozone-ridding substances, the picture is looking brighter.

Good news on the ozone

This is fabulous news to cheer us all up a bit more according to the report.

After panic in the 1980s, the ozone layer has been steadily improving in the wake of the 1989 Montreal protocol, an international agreement to help rid the planet of harmful chemicals.

“Ozone action sets a precedent for climate action,” said Petteri Taalas, secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization.

“Our success in phasing out ozone-eating chemicals shows us what can and must be done as a matter of urgency to transition away from fossil fuels, reduce greenhouse gases and so limit temperature increase.”
