Nine Malawian students from Mnjiri Secondary School, Malawi, joined forces with
Priory Community School Academy, Weston-super-Mare to interview each other in a cultural and journalistic exchange.

Both groups of teens have become part of the Jill Dando News phenomena; they are on a journey to spread good news across the world as part of Jill’s legacy.

The latest centre in Malawi was launched in February and underwent training in interviewing, research and editing skills to equip them as news story writers.

Both teams participated in celebrating the longlasting impact that Jill Dando has had in the world of journalism when the world marked 25 years since her passing in April.

Explaining what they love about Jill Dando News, one Malawian student said: ‘it got us noticed and gave them lots of activities to do’.  Another commented that ‘it’s a good opportunity and many things happen here so it gives us a good chance to build skills.’

The teenagers exchanged ideas and discussed what life was like in the UK and in Malawi.

Malawian pupils explained that in school, they study different subjects such as ‘Textiles, Life Skills and Bible Studies’.  Their favourite sports are ‘Football, Volleyball, and Netball’.

Both sides agreed that a future exchange trip should be planned and should include a sports tournament!

Both groups, despite being across the world, were united in what the Jill Dando News team offers them.  ‘We  collect info we get known and people respect us as we’re included on activities around school’ (Malawi).

‘We work together to promote positive news’ (UK).
