Budding artists and photographers at The King Alfred School an Academy recently entered the current Rotary Art and Photography competition.

The competition’s theme of 'Rebuilding' inspired a remarkable showcase of creativity among students and an impressive array of work.

The theme provided a broad canvas for students to interpret and express their unique visions. Students were encouraged to use both traditional and contemporary methods of art to demonstrate their interpretation of 'Rebuilding'.

Year 12 student Sasha Keates emerged as the winner of the Local Stage of the competition. Sasha's work focused on the destruction of objects and illustrated how these objects, once broken, could be transformed into something beautiful again.

Her unique interpretation of 'Rebuilding' not only won her the top spot locally but also highlighted her passion for photography. Sasha aspires to further her studies at Falmouth University, where she plans to pursue a degree in Documentary and Editorial Photography.

Other notable submissions included intricate Lego houses, capturing the essence of rebuilding brick by brick, and detailed photographs of spider webs, symbolising the delicate and resilient nature of rebuilding in the natural world.

The competition was led by Miss Edgecombe and participants included Colby, Coby, Gracie, Amelia, Alfie, Tristan, and Sasha, many of whom have progressed to become Local, District, and National finalists.

Teacher Miss Edgecombe said "This is the second year we have worked with Rotary at TKASA to organise an Art and Photography competition and we were overwhelmed with the amount of entries from our students. They ranged in scale and material and all showed a different perspective on the Rotary's theme 'Rebuild'.

We thank the Rotary for supporting this fantastic opportunity for our students that allows them to show off their creative side. This year we have celebrated many winners and success, Alfie went through to the national competition with his spider photograph and came 2nd, we are all incredibly proud".

The new theme is 'wonderful water' and entries will need to be submitted between September- October 2024, more information will go out in September.

Principal Mr. Milford praised the participants, stating, "It was wonderful to award our Students of the Week to some great artists and photographers!"
