World and Olympic champions join students in exciting exercise challenge to Lands End, North Pole and Tokyo

Two World and Olympic champions have joined students in an exciting exercise challenge to Lands End, North Pole, Tokyo and beyond.

Kelly Holmes and Beth Tweddle have joined students and staff who are walking, running and cycling virtually from John O’ Groats to Lands End, the North Pole, Tokyo and more world landmarks this month.

Kelly, a double Olympic middle distance champion, and Beth, a world champion in gymnastics, joined Priory Community School Academy in Weston-super-Mare , Somerset, in their round the world challenge.

Both Olympic heroes submitted entries via Twitter to a challenge set by the Priory PE department for students and staff to tour world landmarks virtually.

Kelly and Beth submitted 5km runs, 15km bike rides and several short walks to help boost the total distance covered in the John O’Groats to Lands End challenge, a Weston-super-Mare to New York journey, and North Pole expedition.

Students and staff smashed all targets enthusiastically, and are now virtually heading the 8411 km to Chennai, India - in time for the England cricket fixture on Sunday.

Students have had to record the distance they walk, run or cycle, and send it into the school who tally up the total distance each day.

Principal Angelos Markoutsas said: “Students and staff have really entered into this challenge and everyone received a boost when Kelly and Beth joined in.”
