Weston’s super Mayor visits Worle students!

By Jill Dando News

The fabulous mayor of Weston-super-Mare visited enthusiastic young journalists.

John Crockford-Hawley uncovered his link to Jill Dando to the student Jill Dando News journalists where the scheme began in 2017.

He told the reporters how he met Jill after she started as a young journalist working at the local newspaper, the Weston Mercury in the early 1980s when he first became Mayor.

Ella, 12, who has ambitions of working in the Town Council, said, “I thoroughly enjoyed getting a unique insight into how things work in the council.”

Cllr. John Crockford-Hawley has been working in the Town Council since the late 70’s and was the mayor 40 years ago.

He was recently re-elected as the mayor in April (see https://goodnewspost.co.uk/after-40-years-recycled-weston-super-mayor-returns-to-office/).

He told our students that ‘people need to speak out about what they are doing,’ so that the council can recognise achievements.

He is also the heritage champion for the North Somerset Council, and the figurehead of the Blakehay Theatre and Weston Museum, Town Council projects.

When asked about the importance of young people being educated on politics, he told us, “politics is a mixture of different facts, and trying to convey it is challenging. It is important for young people to be exposed to politics.”

When describing politics, he said, “you shouldn’t be cynical, but you should always be sceptical.”

We asked him about his mayoral responsibilities, and he told us that he likes to meet people, and there’s no better way of getting along than over food! It takes a great deal of time, attending engagements and can be tiring, but it is worth it to make a difference in the community.

WCSA celebrates heroes every day as part of their PROUD plan to inspire students to be Prepared, Respectful, Optimistic, Understanding and Determined.

The school was the first to set up a Jill Dando News Centre in 2017 in memory of former student, Jill Dando.

Oliver, 13, who wrote this story is one of an expanding number of young journalists who find, write and publish positive good news as well as modelling kindness, humility and positivity.

WCSA is full of student heroes who are doing incredible things for other people, the community and to make the world a better place.
