Jill Dando News students at The King Alfred School Academy interviewed the former student David Hughes, a political editor and journalist with PA News.

From his room overlooking the iconic Big Ben in London, David discussed several highlights in his career such as following the journey of political figures such as Nick Clegg and reporting on historical elections in the United Kingdom.

He was originally a student at TKASA and is now a successful and influential journalist.

He went from watching the news on the TV at home after school, to working in a busy newsroom with the astonishing view of Big Ben outside of his window.

David told our aspiring journalists that his job is important because the public need to know what is going on in the world and it is really important to always be truthful.

“If you can’t stand the story up with evidence – you can’t publish it,” he said.

David mentioned that a few of his teachers encouraged his passion for journalism and nurtured his “curiosity” which he said is the “most important skill for a journalist to have.”

Hughes (pictured) works for PA News where he started as a regional reporter before moving to the Westminster team in December 2006 and holding roles including parliamentary reporter, parliamentary editor and political correspondent.

Jill Dando News students have interviewed a range of people including the Prime Minister three times, and BBC’s Fiona Bruce.
