Overwhelmed by UK news? Here are five top tips to find joy amidst it all, by The Post Co-Editor Dawn Carey

As the UK grapples with ongoing social and political upheaval, the co-editor of the Good News Post Dawn Carey is offering guidance to help people feel happier and more able to cope.

Dawn is also CEO of Somerset-based mental health charity In Charley's Memory.

“It's understandable to feel overwhelmed by the constant stream of bad news right now. But it's important to take care of your mental wellbeing, too.

Here are five things to do starting today.

1. Turn off the news.

Watching too much can be a real trigger for those already struggling. That includes on social media which these days is often 24.7 bad news and negativity.

2. Talk it out.

Many of us are feeling the same way. Reach out to friends, family or support services to share your worries. Call the Samaritans if all gets too much.

3. Do something positive.

Make time for the little things you enjoy - meet a friend for coffee, visit your favourite place, or simply do an activity you find fun.

4. Don't hold back tears.

Crying can be a healthy emotional release that helps you process difficult feelings and release the happy hormone oxytocin..

5. Laugh it off.

Put on a comedy show or find the humour in everyday life. Laughter really can be the best medicine.
