The Future is Bright For Grassroots Football

By Sports Correspondent
The Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation has announced that Chelsea captain and England international Millie Bright has joined the team as an Official Supporter.
Millie is joining the UK’s biggest sport’s charity to support its mission to transform communities where the need is greatest and the impact will be strongest, bringing people together regardless of gender, race, disability or place.
Millie Bright said: “Last year I was lucky enough to open The Millie Bright Pitch at Killamarsh Juniors – my childhood club. This was in recognition of the success the Lionesses have had in recent years, but it was also recognition for all the incredible women and girls across the country who have been paving the way in grassroots football.
“Without great places to play this wouldn’t be possible. I want every community to have access to fantastic facilities that support people from whatever background they have.
“It's a real honour to sign up as an Official Supporter of the Football Foundation. I feel so proud to represent a charity that is doing so much to enable more and more women and girls throughout the nation to get down to their local pitches to play football.”
Robert Sullivan, CEO of the Football Foundation, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Millie to the Football Foundation team. Her passion for supporting every community having fair and equal access to a great place to play is infectious.
“Millie is a great example of how important grassroots facilities are for the women’s game, having kicked off her journey to footballing success on pitches at Killamarsh Juniors which have been improved thanks to funding from the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation.
“With Millie on board, we know that more people will be inspired to get active and experience the wide-ranging benefits that come with playing sport, whether that be improved physical and mental health, community cohesion and boosting the local economy too.”
Since England’s triumph at the last EUROs in 2022 and the team’s historic run to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final in 2023 the women and girls’ game has seen huge growth.
The number of girls participating in the sport has doubled over the last four years from 1.2m in the 2020 season to 2.7m in 2024.
However, facilities and conditions have often put women and girls off taking to the pitch. The Football Foundation is working to change this by turbo charging accessible facilities and prioritising access for women and girls.
