Students’ Vision Celebrated in Black History House Cup Competition

The Visual Arts faculty at Ashton Park School in Bristol, UK, proudly relaunched the Black History House Cup competition during art lessons this term, sparking powerful conversations and creative expression among students.

Last year’s event showcased stunning painted portraits of historical figures, but this year, the focus shifted to exploring the impact of racism and celebrating identity, culture, and community.

Ruth Johnstone, Head of Visual Arts, said: “We talked about identity, about culture, about black history, about black culture, about our culture in school, our sense of belonging, our community, and our values.

“The conversations were equally as powerful as the historical portraits of last year and were the unseen element of this exhibition which was hugely impactful.”

These thought-provoking discussions inspired students to design pieces that embody their reflections and celebrate the school’s values and community spirit.

Their incredible designs were showcased at this year’s exhibition, with one standout idea forming the basis for a public artwork.

Headteacher Richard Uffendell said: “I am humbled and proud of our students and their vision for our school and the local community.

“They have all worked incredibly hard, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the winning designs on our local underpass.”

The winning designs were selected after a vote, and the results are as follows:

1st Place: Rudi (Year 8)

2nd Place: Leila (Year 8)

3rd Place: Oscar (Year 9)

4th Place: Menna (Year 8)

5th Place: Taylor (Year 9)

Runners-Up:

• Isla (Year 9)

• Fatou (Year 7)

• Nelly (Year 9)

The final piece, which will be painted on a local underpass, will incorporate elements from each of the nine winning designs. Key themes include:

• Black History colours

• Pride colours

• School values

• School houses

• The Gatehouse symbol

• The word “Belonging”

The Visual Arts team is excited to bring this vision to life, creating a meaningful and lasting celebration of the school’s culture, diversity, and shared values.
