Some 15 brilliant students stood up in front of other students, staff, friends and family to share their speech in a more formal setting to prepare them for their lives as an adult outside of school.
The Edvocate Programme was a great opportunity for Year 10 students at Priory Community School An Academy in Weston-super-Mare Somerset to develop their research skills, independent study and presenting ability.
Students had a choice on which topics to speak about; they were encouraged to choose something which passionately matters to them.
A few examples of topics included 'Has Disney ruined Star Wars?' by Finlay Satchwell, 'Are we doing enough to stop knife crime?' by Naledi Mabasa and 'How do planes go missing?' by Libby Hadley.
The 12 students had to write to the school's English department to apply to the Programme, expressing an interest in presenting publicly on issues which meant a lot to them.
A spokesperson for the English department said: 'The students have really impressed us with their passion and interest for their subjects.
“They have demonstrated superb oracy skills this evening, presenting with confidence in a large, formal setting. The audience certainly learnt a lot and we have all been inspired by their engaging speeches.”
