Around 25 students competed in a Poetry Slam at Priory Community School Academy in Somerset.
The students battled it out to get through to the semi-final and then three of the best were chosen to go through to the final to win a trophy and be crowned the 2024 poetry slam winner!
The three winners from the semi-final, Nikole, Sydney and Matthew, then continued on to the final!
It was a very hard decision, however, Nikole was presented the final winner with an inspirational poem about the war in Ukraine.
Sydney spoke about young people’s pressures and their mental health and Matthew wrote one about autism and what it’s like to be autistic.
Another poem that stood out was a powerful poem written by Maisie and was based on an episode of Eastenders about a featured character called Yolande.
The poem was written about the characters story around her struggle with sexual assault.
This story was then emailed to the BBC and was forwarded onto the actress Angela Wynter.
They all did an amazing job on writing their poems and should all be very proud of themselves for standing up in front of their peers, and well done Nikole!
