Over the last five weeks, students from WCSA have been given the amazing opportunity to learn to cook five fantastic fresh meals from scratch, as part of a new initiative designed to equip young people with essential life skills.
During their five week crash course at WCSA, the students have cooked healthy Spanish meals in a curriculum crossover, which involved the outstanding school’s languages teachers as well as the amazing charity’s founder, food writer and campaigner Kate Percy.
The Cook5 initiative has taken Crunch to two other schools since its launch, and WCSA is proud to be one of the schools that are leading the way in helping young people develop these essential skills, from making delicious food to washing up!
Each week, the initiative has taught students how to cook a meal focusing on each of the five nutrition groups: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals, and the final fantastic meal that the students made was ‘Pinchos Morunos,’ a type of delicious Spanish Kebab, and a side of mayonnaise!
For the final week, the school welcomed the students’ parents to have the opportunity to see their 11-14 year olds hard at work making their tasty treats, as well as to try some Spanish food like anchovy stuffed olives themselves!
The parents agreed that it is an ‘amazing idea’ and a fantastic initiative.’
When introducing the scheme to the parents, Kate provided some shocking statistics that emphasized the importance of this initiative, such as ‘66% of our teenagers’ calories come from ultra-processed foods.’
By educating the students with nutrition tips and teaching the fantastic 5 meals and practical skills, the Bristol charity aims to make Bristol the first Cook5 city, and WCSA is ‘incredibly proud’ to be a part of it.
