St Paul’s Church in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset near Bristol, has become a beacon of hope for the local community—feeding 600 people over 10 weeks through its free, freshly prepared Thursday evening meal service during the winter months.

What began as a response to rising living costs has quickly become a lifeline for many struggling with financial hardship and social isolation.

Rev. Craig Philbrick, Vicar of St Paul’s, shared the heart behind the initiative:

“This is why our church is here—to help people. It’s not just about providing a meal, it’s about showing love, building community, and offering hope when people need it most.
“We want everyone who walks through our doors to know they are welcome and that they’re not alone.”

Each week, around 60 people have been gathering at St Paul’s Church to enjoy a hot, nourishing meal.

The volunteer team prepared comforting dishes such as spaghetti bolognese, casseroles, and warming soups, with a sweet dessert to finish.

Volunteer Mel Bray, who helps organise the service, highlighted the wider impact:

“We’re passionate about supporting our community in practical ways—especially with the current cost-of-living crisis. “Beyond the food, we hope to create a space where people feel valued, connected, and cared for. A huge thank you to Waitrose, Tesco, Asda, and North Somerset Council, whose generosity makes this possible.”

The free meal service has not only filled stomachs but also lifted spirits, providing a warm, welcoming environment where friendships are formed and no one is turned away.

Located in the heart of Weston-super-Mare, St Paul’s Church remains open to everyone, with no questions asked—reflecting its commitment to serving the local community with compassion and practical support.
