Pioneering Initiative Aims to Reduce Alarming Suicide Rates Among UK Construction Workers

Professional rugby player Josh Caulfield and his brother, former international player Jake Caulfield, are launching a life-saving initiative to revolutionise mental health support in the construction industry – a sector where workers are nearly three times more likely to die by suicide than the national average.

Drawing from their own experiences with the pressures of professional sports, the Caulfield brothers have founded Evolution Developments in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, with a mission to transform how the construction industry approaches mental wellbeing across the southwest.

Jake Caulfield said: “The industry's 'tough it out' culture often prevents people from speaking up when they're struggling. We want to change that—because talking can literally save lives."

In partnership with mental health experts Wendy Griffin, CEO of Wellspring Counselling, and Dawn Carey, CEO of In Charley's Memory, the brothers have developed a comprehensive mental fitness program specifically designed for construction environments.

Their approach makes mental wellbeing as fundamental as hard hats and safety protocols.

The initiative includes:

On-Site Mental Health Check-In– Integrating mental wellbeing into daily safety briefings

Site Mental Health Champions – Training key workers to facilitate conversations and offer peer support

Digital Support Network – Providing workers with access to online mental health resources

Help Signposting – Ensuring every worker knows where to find professional help

Industry-Wide Collaboration – Bringing together companies to drive cultural change

Wendy Griffin said: "This initiative is a game-changer. It's time for mental health to be seen as a core part of workplace safety—not a side issue."
Dawn Carey added: "We've seen too many lives lost. The Caulfields are leading the way in showing that change is not just possible—it's essential."

The brothers are now inviting construction companies of all sizes to join their movement.

Evolution Developments offers flexible partnership options, from full program implementation to targeted training sessions.

"This isn't just about helping individuals—it's about changing the way the entire industry thinks about mental fitness," says Josh Caulfield.
"Every worker on every site should have access to the mental health support they need—no exceptions."
