Primary School Shines with 'Good' Ofsted Rating"

Ashton Vale Primary School in Ashton Vale, South Bristol, is celebrating the publication of a highly positive Ofsted report (rated ‘Good’ in all areas), which found that pupils “show respect and tolerance to one another” and “develop warm and trusting relationships with staff.
They are safe and trust staff to support and guide them. They know they will be heard. Pupils behave well during lessons and social times. They enjoy school and most attend well.”

In the first inspection since Ashton Vale joined Excalibur Academies Trust, Ashton Vale was found to be “ambitious for all pupils”, with praise for the redeveloped and strengthened curriculum which is evidently working its magic:
“It is well designed from Reception Year to Year 6. Pupils revisit learning regularly and link this knowledge to new ideas and concepts."

Furthermore, “Staff support pupils to deepen their knowledge through making connections between different curriculum subjects. For example, pupils link the impact of human geography to their scientific knowledge”.

The school’s values Heart values – Heart, Equality, Aspiration, Responsibility and Thinking together were praised for underpinning everyday life and, just as importantly, are setting a firm foundation for adopting these positive attitudes and behaviour within wider society.

One example is Ashton Vale’s ‘buddies’ where, through the older pupil’s supporting of younger children, “helps them to learn about responsibility”.
Ashton Vale was proud that Ofsted recognised reading as being “the bedrock of the school’s curriculum”, thanks to its “skilled staff” who “support children to develop a wide vocabulary”, with a “sharp focus on ensuring that children communicate confidently”.
Beyond, the academic, pupils at Ashton Vale “benefit from a wide extra-curricular offer. This includes a range of clubs such as chess and sports. Through such opportunities, pupils develop new skills and talents”.
