Paws and Applause: Annual Animal Service Draws Record Crowd
By Jill Dando News
Nearly 500 animal enthusiasts and their companions – including an unexpected miniature pony and donkey – gathered for a cathedral's yearly animal blessing service.
Dogs dominated the attendance, but a handful of calm cats, rabbits, hamsters, and gerbils also joined the celebration at Ely Cathedral on Sunday afternoon.
Event organizers noted that the 22-year-old pony made a special journey from Buckinghamshire, accompanied by her young owner Primrose, age 8, and family members.
A spokesperson for the cathedral explained that the service aims to "honor animals of all varieties".
The event, which highlighted animal welfare and working animals, featured representatives from Medical Detection Dogs, an organization based in Milton Keynes.
Attendees learned that in addition to training dogs to assist individuals with life-threatening health conditions, the charity conducts research on detecting serious diseases, including cancer, through the use of bio-detection dogs.
The spokesperson added: "We recognize the joy and solace our pets provide, but this event also acknowledges those who care for animals and the animals that support us in our daily lives, such as therapy dogs, guide dogs, and medical detection dogs, as well as animals working alongside police, armed forces, and search and rescue teams."
