Parkrun, a community organisation across 23 countries, celebrated its 20th birthday on Saturday.
In 2004, Paul Sinton-Hewitt organised the Bushy Park Time Trial. Since then, 2,200 Parkruns have taken place, all managed thanks to huge amounts of volunteers.
Parkrun increases life satisfaction and is worth £667 million a year to the UK economy.
Now, over 40,000 volunteers take part every week, and 99% recommend it, saying that it is ‘rewarding’ and ‘great to take part in the community.’
No matter what your background, age, or ability, parkruns are for everyone! You can even just walk or watch!
You don’t need any special gear, just something that you feel comfortable in!
Younger members from the ages of 4 to 14 can take part in the 2 kilometres junior parkrun, or even the adults’ 5 kilometre parkrun.
According to the parkrun website, the inclusive event is ‘a place where people can come together, to move however they like, and feel good, which is why we call it: The Feel Good Movement.’
90,000 people took part for the first time in 2023, and the organisation is eager to draw in more competitors to stay healthy and have fun with their family and friends on a Saturday morning.
