A local fundraising champion is lacing up his running shoes to help save lives across Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

Alex, a Digital Specialist at Howards Motor Group, will take on the Weston-super-Mare Half Marathon this October in support of the Donate For Defib WsM Project, an initiative focused on installing publicly accessible defibrillators (AEDs) across the community.

Alex’s fundraising mission is personal and powerful.

His colleague, Josh Bell, is the Project Lead at Donate For Defib, and together they’re working toward a goal that could mean the difference between life and death in the event of a cardiac emergency.

“Defibrillators can increase the chance of survival by up to 70% when used quickly after a cardiac arrest,” said Josh. “Alex stepping up to take on the half marathon is just another example of how our community is coming together to make a real impact.”

A Cause That Saves Lives

Each year, over 30,000 people in the UK suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces survival chances by 10%. AEDs—especially when publicly accessible—can be the critical link in the chain of survival.

“Running 13.1 miles won’t be easy,” said Alex, “but it’s nothing compared to what someone experiences during a cardiac arrest. If I can raise awareness and funds to get even one more AED installed, it’s worth every step.”

Alex is calling on the local community for support:

  • Donate: Contributions can be made via his Enthuse fundraising page.
  • Show up: Cheer Alex on in person at the Weston Half this October.
  • Leave a message: Share words of encouragement via Alex’s dedicated page on the Donate For Defib website.
“Community support is everything,” said Alex. “Let’s turn awareness into action and make our town safer for everyone.”

Lifesaving Goals

Funds raised will go directly toward the purchase and installation of AEDs throughout Weston-super-Mare. As part of the ongoing Donate For Defib campaign, the initiative also aims to increase public knowledge and confidence in using defibrillators during emergencies.

So, whether you're a runner, a supporter, or just passionate about heart health, now’s the time to get involved.

Together, we can help Alex cross the finish line—and bring lifesaving tech closer to home.
