Tenor Eric Cutler is set to take the lead role of Florestan in Beethoven's only opera, "Fidelio," from October 9-26.

But he discovered his love for opera in the cornfields of Iowa, America.

His family had an exchange student called Pablo from Mexico during his 10th grade of high school and the pair became good friends. It was to be a connection that changed the story forever.

Pablo’s father was a tenor and often played opera that reminded him of home and that was Eric’s introduction to opera.

Now, 25 years later, aged 48, Cutler has performed nearly 75 roles on stages across the globe – all thanks to that chance encounter with Pablo and his father's music.

Moreover, the family dog is named is after him (pictured below) and apparently Eric and his wife wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for him.

As Cutler prepares for this latest performance, his story serves as a reminder that inspiration can come from the most unexpected places – even the cornfields of Iowa.
