Local Charity Takes Innovative Approach to Tackle Knife Crime
By Jill Dando News
In a heartening display of community spirit, East London-based charity The Wickers is set to host its fifth annual fundraiser to combat the rising tide of knife crime in the UK.
The event, aptly named "It's a Knock Out Challenge," is scheduled for September 13th at the Memorial Ground in East London.
A Fun-Filled Day with a Serious Purpose
The Wickers Charity, founded in 2018 by businessman and philanthropist Henry Smith, is bridging the gap where government funding falls short.
With knife crime offences having risen by over 80% in the past decade and 7% year-on-year, the charity's work has never been more crucial.
Brogan Garrit-Smith, the Fundraising Manager and daughter of the founder, explains, "It's an action-packed fun day filled with laughter, obstacles, and competitive spirit. We're grateful to have an array of companies participating, with over 100 attendees all ready to take a shot at winning the cup!"
More Than Just a Game
The "It's a Knock Out Challenge" is not just about fun and games. Teams of up to 10 people can enter at a suggested donation of £1,500, which includes food, drinks, and eligibility to compete. Last year's event saw Stirling Ackroyd emerge victorious at the East Ham Rugby Club.
The funds raised go directly towards The Wickers' mission of providing free after-school activities, support services to schools, and employability workshops for young people in the community.
The charity believes in supporting youth regardless of social status, race, religion, or postcode.
A Personal Mission
For Henry Smith, the charity's founder, this cause is deeply personal. Having been directly affected by the consequences of knife crime in London, Smith decided to create a charity that would offer viable alternatives to gang culture and provide opportunities for at-risk youth.
Looking Ahead
As knife crime continues to be a pressing issue, The Wickers stands as a beacon of hope. With more funding, the charity aims to expand its reach and serve as an example to other organizations working with at-risk youth across the country.
The "It's a Knock Out Challenge" on September 13th represents more than just a day of fun—it's a community coming together to say no to knife crime and yes to a brighter future for its youth.
