Pupils at Saltford CofE School are celebrating after the school achieved the prestigious Equal Access School award from The FA and Barclays, marking its exceptional commitment to providing equal opportunities for girls in football.

The prestigious award is yet another brilliant success for the school - and the first in the Futura Learning Partnership.

The award recognises schools that align with the mission of The FA and Barclays Girls’ Football School Partnerships, which is to ensure that all girls have equal access to football both within the curriculum and through extra-curricular activities.

The school also holds the Platinum School Games Mark, a testament to its wider commitment to sports excellence.

In a letter accompanying the award, Baroness Sue Campbell DBE, Women’s Football Director at The FA, praised the school.

She said: “The England women's football team continue to inspire a nation after being crowned European Champions in 2022.

“They lobbied their government to ensure all girls can dream of one day being a Lioness by having the opportunity to play at school. Thank you for making this a reality.”

At Saltford School, the success of girls’ football is driven by the passion and teamwork of PE Lead Melissa Brook, supported by Charlotte Hardy, Claire Rich, Andrea Hathaway and Steve and Emily from Bath City Foundation who provide expert coaching during lunchtime and after-school clubs.

Melissa Brook said: “This award is a reflection of the dedication and passion from every member of our team who works hard to make football accessible and enjoyable for all our girls.”

The students themselves are equally enthusiastic.

Rosanna, a pupil, said, “Playing football at school as a girl is really important to me because it doesn’t matter what gender you are – you can always have fun in any sport.”

Lauren added, “Everyone is given a turn to play football. It’s really great and you can play with friends and learn new skills.”
