Many children express how they feel included and represented when they find out that the new live-action Little Mermaid features a mermaid who looks more like them.
Acclaimed American actress Halle Berry is to bring greater diversity to the Disney princess world by playing Ariel in the new live-action version of The Little Mermaid which is due to be released in May 2023. See trailer here… https://youtu.be/0-wPm99PF9U
In the previous Disney animation, Ariel had been a red-haired and pale-skinned so the change has caused some criticism which has been deemed racist in tone. Despite this, little Disney princesses around the globe have been showing their love for the mermaid.
Parents have been sharing the heartwarming reaction videos of their daughters watching the new teaser trailer which was released this week.
In one clip, a young Black girl jumps up from the sofa upon seeing the black Ariel and says: ‘I see she’s brown! Brown Ariel! Brown Ariel is cute.’
