Fabulous free festival enjoyed by thousands

The Fisherman’s Friends from Cornwall are probably largely responsible for the modern popularity in sea shanties. The songs sung by sailors whilst sailing around the world.
That popularity has led to festivals around the country and this year was the 4th Festival at Weston Super Mare.
It is quickly becoming an established festival and is one of the largest in the South West.
Weston’s own Steepholmers Shanty Band and their Captain Nigel Glanville-Gittens deserve great credit.
There were acts playping all over the Weston Super Mare area in various pubs, hotels and other venues but the main stage was in the Italian Gardens in the centre of the town.
People made donations which goes to local charities (the ever-deserving RNLI and the Lions Club).
Artists come from far and wide, some are large groups with many members, some are solo. Some sing acapella, some have some instruments.
All have one thing in common, they pay their own expenses, and they play for free.
They play for the love of sea shanties and folk music. That love comes across in the passionate and enthusiastic performances.
People heard from best known sea shanties (often more than once!) such as South Australia, Drunken sailor, Haul Away Joe etc.
Adding to the atmosphere were fans dressed in sailor and pirate costumes.
This is an annual well organised event that is worthy of support as so many give their time for free and local charities benefit.
More importantly it is great fun and very enjoyable. It is a festival going from strength to strength.
It is over for this year but do not miss it next year!
