Brilliant child aged 11 wins prestigious award after helping hundreds of homeless people

Uwyn Llewelyn, aged 11, of Chilton Trinity in Bridgwater, Somerset was awarded with the town Mayor Youth Award for his compassion shown towards vulnerable adults and families.

He set up the gift of giving homeless Shoebox Appeal Bridgwater when aged only 7 along with his mum Kelly and it has been running now for four years.

The schemes provides hundreds of emergency bags for rough sleepers and adults and families living within emergency accommodation and the community.

Christmas meals are also provided and held at the YMCA Bridgwater every year. Christmas presents are given to families facing hardship and Easter eggs are also given at Easter to families facing hardship.

Uwyn said: “When I was six or seven, I saw a homeless man in Bridgwater on the street. I felt really bad for the man and felt like he was really struggling so I brought a drink, a sausage roll out of my pocket money and gave him some. My ambition is to help all homeless men and women to get of the streets in Somerset.”

Headteacher James Lamb said: “This is a fantastic achievement.”
