In Charley’s Memory to reopen ‘The Zone’, extending reach of wellbeing support for Young People

By Jill Dando News

In a move rooted in its core mission of providing outreach and early intervention wellbeing support, In Charley’s Memory (ICM) announces its takeover of ‘The Zone’ youth club, located in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset

This initiative marks a significant step forward in the safeguarding of essential youth provisions for the area’s young people.

Recognising the imminent closure of ‘The Zone’, and the threat of over 30 young people losing their youth club, ICM stepped in to ensure its continuity, reaffirming its commitment to fostering the mental wellbeing of young people.

By bringing ‘The Zone’ under its umbrella, ICM aims to extend its reach and provide a vital outlet for youth engagement, socialisation, and support.

“The Zone is an amazing, safe space for children and young people to meet their friends, hang out, and engage in activities that wouldn’t normally be available to them”, says Dawn Carey, CEO at ICM.

“Youth work is vital to the mental wellbeing and development of our community, and having a hub in the centre of Burnham will allow us to informally connect with young people from Burnham and Highbridge, mentoring them through key developmental years”.

The club will continue to operate on Tuesday evenings from 3:30 to 5:30, at the BAY Club, Burnham-on-Sea, welcoming young people from year 6 to year 11 (ages 10-16). Membership is ‘pay-as-you-attend’ at £1 per week, which supports the venue, staffing and associated costs.

There will be a grand relaunch event in the coming weeks – please keep an eye out for further announcements on this.

“We are excited to build upon the incredible work of previous managers Jayne and Brandon, and infuse our expertise into the project,” added Dawn. “Our goal is to create a safe and inclusive space where amidst the fun-filled activities, young people feel empowered to seek support and navigate life’s challenges with the support of both their peers and our experienced staff.”
