In Charley’s Memory: Fast Expanding Mental Health Charity Celebrates 10 years Helping People

In Charley’s Memory (ICM) is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, marking a decade of providing vital support and raising awareness about mental health, following the tragic death of Charley in 2014.

His mother, Jo, established the charity with the aim of preventing other families from experiencing the same heartache caused by suicide.

“Charley’s story was heartbreaking, but sadly not unique,” says a close friend and long-time supporter of the charity. “I became involved because I didn’t want to see anyone else go through what we did.”

ICM quickly gained traction, with its Facebook page attracting 25,000 followers in its early days. Local support helped the charity secure office space, and soon, people began reaching out to share their own struggles.

Charley’s story resonated with many, highlighting the urgent need for open discussions about mental health and emotional well-being.

What started as a project focused on awareness has evolved over the years to offer professional counselling services for children and young people (CYP).

Today, ICM supports over 5,000 children each week through its schools project and has become a trusted resource across Somerset and North Somerset. The charity’s strong partnerships with colleges and universities also allow it to provide student placements, helping to meet the growing demand for services.

“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved, but every day, we’re reminded that Charley isn’t here,” says the charity’s CEO. “It’s incredibly rewarding to know we’ve supported so many over the years.”

To mark the 10-year milestone, ICM will host a special anniversary ball on 15th March at the Winter Gardens in Weston-super-Mare.

The event will bring together supporters, staff, and businesses to celebrate the charity’s success and raise funds to continue its important work.

“There are many ways to get involved,” the CEO adds. “Whether by buying a ticket, reserving a table, or pledging your support for the year ahead, we’d love for you to join us.”
