Today (Thursday 10 October) marks World Mental Health Day 2024, a date dedicated to raising awareness and promoting mental well-being globally.

This day serves as a vital reminder of the importance of mental health and the need to foster supportive communities where individuals can seek help without stigma.

In line with this mission, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) is proud to spotlight the outstanding work of its grassroots clubs and the inspiring initiatives they’ve developed following personal tragedies within their communities.

Their stories not only honour the memories of those lost, but also foster a culture of care and support among players, families, and fans.

Alex Meek and Heolgerrig Red Lion FC: A Lasting Legacy

Alex Meek’s life was commemorated with the Special Recognition Award at the 2024 FAW McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards which highlighted Alex’s incredible contributions to Heolgerrig Red Lion FC.

Under Alex’s vision and determination, the club has grown significantly, now supporting over 400 young athletes. His passion for the game extended beyond boys’ football; he introduced girls’ football to the club, resulting in over 140 young girls participating and learning the sport.

Reflecting on Alex’s impact as his Coach, Heolgerrig Red Lion FC Player Connor said, “Alex made me a better person and developed me to be the player I am today.”

The loss of Alex has left a profound sense of grief across the community, but Alex’s legacy lives on through the initiatives that have been established.

In Alex’s name, Heolgerrig Red Lion FC has collaborated with the mental health charity Signpost Cymru and the local community have raised over £30,000 to support mental health initiatives in Wales.

They’ve also opened a drop-in hub called #meek6, providing access to therapy and support.

Alex’s Father and Club Chairman Paul Meek added: “Alex was an ambassador for the sport and continues to help those in and around it.”

Connah’s Quay Town FC: Together Stronger for Jamie Wynne

Connah’s Quay Town FC was awarded the Together Stronger Award at the 2024 FAW McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards for their compassionate response to the tragic passing of their beloved player, Jamie Wynne.

Following Jamie’s death by suicide 18 months ago, the club has implemented a comprehensive mental health strategy for both fans and players.

In the spirit of community, Connah’s Quay has created a safe space for open discussions about mental health, provided training, and connected individuals with essential support services.

“Together Stronger” truly reflects the ethos of the club, embodying their commitment to support one another and their wider Deeside community.

Their efforts include producing literature that promotes mental health resources and introduces well-being champions within the club, making it easier for members to access support from organisations like Samaritans, Mind, and Shout.
