A homeless man has received an overwhelming response after holding a sign that said he was looking for a job—not money.

Mark Hamblin, a self-employed roofer from Bridgwater in Somerset, saw his work dry up after taking time off to care for his ill father. Because he was self-employed, he wasn't eligible for government benefits and eventually found himself living in a van.

Determined to get back on his feet, Mr. Hamblin stood in town with a cardboard sign explaining his situation and his desire to work.

The gesture struck a chord with passersby and soon sparked a flood of support online and offline.

“I’m absolutely overwhelmed by the number of responses I’ve had,” Mark told the BBC. “It makes me feel hopeful again—that there are still good people out there willing to help and offer encouragement.”

Mr. Hamblin said he received around 500 messages of support, including job offers from as far afield as Scotland and even Tuscany.

Many of the messages were simply kind words from strangers, which he said meant just as much as the offers of work.

Now, he's preparing to start a full-time job with a local roofing company on Tuesday.
