Good News Post Reporters Witness History in Parliament

Exclusive By Jill Dando News

Earlier today, young reporters Ben and Oliver from The Good News Post made headlines themselves by interviewing both 10-year-old Owen Glass—the youngest person ever to speak in Parliament—and Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons.

The two 14-year-old reporters, both students at Jill Dando’s former school, Worle School in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, captured exclusive insights from Owen shortly before he addressed the House during the annual sitting of the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP).

Owen, who traveled over a week by sea and air from the remote island of Tristan da Cunha, became the youngest person in history to speak in the iconic Commons Chamber.

He shared stories about life on the island—home to just 230 people, one school, one pub, and no restaurants—and spoke passionately about the unique challenges of living in one of the most isolated communities on earth.

“I’m very excited to speak in the House of Commons,” Owen said: “The biggest audience I’ve ever spoken to before was as a wise man in the school nativity, which was watched by half the island!”

The young reporters also had an exclusive follow-up conversation with Mr Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle - a patron of Jill Dando News.

Oliver, already recognized as the world’s first Teenage Parliamentary Correspondent for The Good News Post, continues to blaze a trail in youth journalism.

Recently, his interview with Sir Lindsay Hoyle was released on YouTube, earning him the prestigious Jill Dando News Journalist of the Year award.

Throughout the day, Ben and Oliver have joined major news outlets like Sky News and ITV, documenting every moment as 261 young people aged 11 to 18 take over the House of Commons Chamber, debating issues that shape their futures—including votes for 16- and 17-year-olds, political education, and free public transport for young people.

With today’s exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes coverage, The Good News Post continues to lead the way in positive journalism, giving young voices a powerful platform to be heard.

Over recent years, their work has gained the backing of two prime ministers and included high-profile interviews, such as a sit-down with Boris Johnson inside Downing Street.

The Jill Dando News team is not only inspiring young reporters in the UK but also globally—having established Good News Rooms across schools in the UK and as far afield as Malawi in 2018.
