An inspirational woman and motivational speaker has returned to her former school for a Headteachers’ conference. Here Disabilities Editor Ellise explains what it was like…

“I was so delighted to speak at my first ever headteacher conference, when my old secondary school principal, Gregg Morrison asked me if I would like to be a guest speaker at this year’s Somerset Association of Secondary Headteachers Conference.

I had the real honour to deliver a presentation about my life with cerebral palsy, my experiences in mainstream education and communication journey.

It was also lovely to see a few familiar faces there from my secondary school too, so great to praise them and thank them for everything that they did for me during my time at Preston School In Yeovil.

They were the ones who inspired me to work in education.

The message I would like to give to everyone in education is ‘Ask, Never Assume. A smile and a ‘hello’ goes a long way.’ Little gestures make a positive difference and impact on people.

If any students are reading this and want to be a headteacher in the future, I believe being a headteacher could be a hard job but the most rewarding job.

How amazing to watch your staff and students grow and develop. You could make a positive impact on their education journey and remember that, It’s good to ask for guidance.

There are lots of current headteachers who can help you as you embark on your career. They were in the same boat as you once.

Never give up on your dreams!“
