Clevedon School hosted a thrilling Sports Awards Evening, celebrating its students’ exceptional sporting achievements with a star-studded lineup and a surprise video appearance from England football legend Alan Shearer.

The evening, modelled after the iconic BBC Sports Personality of the Year, shone a spotlight on young athletes, with awards presented in categories such as specific sports achievements, sports leadership, sports commitment, team of the year, and sports personality of the year.

The atmosphere was electric as Alan Shearer, former England striker, kicked off the event in a video message, congratulating Clevedon students on their dedication and success.

“Congratulations on being nominated for at least one sport award this evening.
“Through your commitment and hard work, you all have earned your place at tonight’s awards. You should all be very, very proud,” Shearer encouraged, also sharing his own lifelong passion for sport and its profound impact on his life.

The evening featured two remarkable guests: Lele Nairne, judo world champion 2024 and Paris Olympian, and Tom Foley, an endurance athlete who completed a transatlantic rowing challenge in 2020.

Lele Nairne, who was sponsored during her global judo heroics by one of Britain’s top firms, the Ascot Group in North Somerset, where she works, helped present the awards. Nairne is a 2018 European U23 silver medalist and 2023 BritishJudo Champion in the -57 kg category.

In addition to Shearer’s message, the event included video appearances from elite athletes and Clevedon alumni such as footballer Jack Butland, marathoner Kate Reed, U21 England Rugby player Lucy Finch and Reneequa Bonner.

Their messages of encouragement aimed to inspire Clevedon’s next generation of athletes.

Louise Wilkins, curriculum leader of PE, said:

“We are super proud for each and every student that received a nomination and award.
“It was so incredible to have all of the inspirational heroes from different sports with us on the evening with their own message of encouragement and tips on success .
“I know the students will never forget their powerful stories of the power of sport to change lives.”
