Brilliant School Empowers Students with Bold Message for International Women’s Day

By Education Correspondent
In recognition of International Women’s Day 2025, Clevedon School has launched a powerful initiative to promote gender equality and raise awareness of the challenges many still face today.
Through a series of thought-provoking assemblies and a specially produced video, the school is providing students with a platform to share their personal experiences with gender-based discrimination and encouraging the entire school community to become advocates for change.
Led by teachers Ellie Wood and Jen Selvey, alongside three passionate Year 10 students, the assemblies highlighted the reality of gender inequality through first-hand testimonies.
In a striking display of courage, students shared personal experiences of unwanted and inappropriate behaviour, shedding light on the real-life challenges many young people face.
The testimonies were used as an educational tool, helping students understand how to recognize, prevent, and respond to such behaviours both in school and in the wider community.
The assembly concluded with a compelling video emphasizing the need for gender equality across all areas of life.
Sam Thomas, Assistant Headteacher at Clevedon School, said: “The bravery shown by our students in sharing their experiences was really inspiring.
“At Clevedon School, we are committed to fostering a culture where everyone feels safe, valued, and empowered to challenge inequality whenever they see it.”
The event also demonstrated the school’s commitment to solidarity, with male and female staff from across the school coming together to support the message that gender equality is a shared responsibility.
Ellie Wood and Jen Selvey said: “It was a privilege to empower our students to share their personal stories and educate the rest of the student body about what gender discrimination looks like and how to challenge it.
“It is such an important message for young people to learn.
“What makes the initiative even more impressive is the maturity and leadership displayed by the 15-year-old students driving the discussions.
“Their courage has sparked meaningful conversations and encouraged both students and staff to take an active role in promoting equality.”
