As part of its Airport Community Fund, Birmingham Airport has donated £5,000 to Birmingham Stirling Sea Cadets to fund the purchase of new kayaks.

Based in Shard End, Birmingham, the registered charity offers active experiences to young people helping them grow, develop and upskill themselves in a fully inclusive environment.

Through various water activities and adventures, cadets learn key skills
to become the best version of themselves.

The monetary grant awarded by the Birmingham Airport Community Fund will fully fund 10 new kayaks to enable the group to increase the capacity of their classes and train more young people out on the water.

The funding awarded forms part of the Birmingham Airport Community Trust Fund which awards grants of up to £5,000 to community groups in areas most affected by the Airport’s operations.

Last year, the Trust awarded over £175,000 in monetary grants to local causes near Birmingham Airport.

Commenting on the grant, Tom Denton, Head of Sustainability at Birmingham Airport said: “The trustees decided to award the Stirling Sea Cadets with this monetary grant as the group has a clear positive impact on hundreds of young people with their nautical adventure sessions.
We’re delighted that our donation will help scale the charity’s activities, meaning the organisation can make even more of a positive impact in our local area.
Through the sessions, the cadets will be equipped with invaluable skills
including communication, collaboration and timekeeping. These skills are all clearly transferable to their respective professional futures, whether that is in a career here at Birmingham Airport or elsewhere in the region".
Sub-Lieutenant Joe Nelson, Commanding Officer at Stirling Sea Cadets said: “We are very grateful to Birmingham Airport for awarding our group with this generous grant. The £5,000 donation will enable us to purchase two new boats
which will help more of our cadets get out on the water and gain new qualifications, as well as life skills”

The next available round of Trust Fund awards will be made in April 2025.

The closing date for completed applications is Friday 28 th February 2025. To find out more information on the Birmingham Airport Community Trust Fund and apply, please visit the Birmingham Airport website.
