As part of the home improvement retailer’s annual B&Q Community Days drive, a group of colleagues offered their DIY skills to spruce up the garden/outside area at YMCA Weston-super-Mare.

The team of volunteers from the Weston B&Q branch spent the day building raised beds for vegetables and plants, potting hanging baskets and creating a bin shelter.

The team shared their knowledge with residents and our YMCA team who were all eager to get involved and learn more.

As a thank you for their time, residents at YMCA Weston decided to make a lunch for the volunteers, which they shared together during the day.

Des McCarthy store manager of B&Q Weston 1320 said,

“It’s great to be helping YMCA, the whole team love putting their practical skills to use and when it’s to support a good cause it’s even better. Fundraising weekends in store are always fun but seeing a project completed by the team gives a great sense of satisfaction.”

The day has provided residents a fantastic space which is tidy and welcoming and with many of them wanting to grow their own produce, now they can.

One member of the YMCA Weston Team explained: “The hard work that B&Q put into our garden and outdoor space has made a positive difference in our community and in our young people’s lives. When people find themselves in difficult circumstances, having a welcoming place to spend time makes all the difference. For many, ‘home’ means the local community centre where they can sit down to a warm meal. For others, it means the supported residence where they are able to re-build their futures. Huge thank you to Weston Super mare B&Q store for all support they have given us.”

YMCA Dulverton Group would like to thank B&Q and the volunteers from the Weston branch for their support.
