Arise Sir Tom! War hero Captain Tom Moore, 99, completes 100 laps of garden raising whopping £20m for NHS

A World War Two veteran has finished his mammoth walking challenge and raised £20 million - and now there are widespread calls for him to be knighted.

Tom took up the challenge to walk 100 laps of his garden before he reaches 100 on 30 April, but smashed his target.

The war hero from Bedfordshire even broke his hip 18 months ago, but this did not stop him wanting to raise £1,000 for NHS charities to help fight Covid-19.

The figure he has raised is now £14 million and counting.

People from 53 nations have given money already.

Speaking to LBC, Mr Moore said: "It started off as a little joke we had in our family that as I was about to turn 100, why not walk 100 laps of the garden?

"We hoped to raise £1,000 but of course I did a little bit better.”
