At just 18 years old, Archie Matthews, a former Head Boy of Worle Community School Academy (WCSA) in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, is proving himself a true force in gardening and environmental advocacy.

This rising star has just added a prestigious silver medal from the World Skills competition to his growing list of achievements—beating seasoned professionals, some nearly twice his age.

Archie’s remarkable journey began as a student reporter for Jill Dando News, following in the footsteps of the school’s most famous alumna, the late broadcaster Jill Dando.

It was also during his school years that he first caught the attention of gardening legend Alan Titchmarsh CBE.

Inspired by Archie’s commitment to the environment, Alan sent him a personal letter of encouragement, sparking a passion that continues to blossom today.

Reflecting on Archie’s latest success this week, Alan, a former friend of Jill Dando said:

“Archie’s success shows just how rewarding it is to cherish the landscape and the plants that grow in it. Gardening is such a great way of getting in touch with nature and showing what a difference we can all make to our surroundings and the wildlife that inhabits the earth.”
“He is an inspiration to the next generation of gardeners and deserves our congratulations and encouragement.”

Archie first captured Alan’s attention in 2020, receiving a handwritten letter and signed autograph from his hero. Alan praised Archie’s environmental work, which included clearing rubbish and weeds from local parks and ensuring pathways were safe for the elderly and young families.

Archie had also launched a business during the COVID-19 lockdown, cleaning over 100 private gardens.

Archie’s latest triumph at World Skills involved an intense five-day competition in Oldham, where he constructed a garden from scratch in just 16.5 hours.

The tasks included laying paving, building walls, creating pathways, and passing a rigorous plant identification exam.

“It was an incredible challenge,” Archie shared. “The hours were long, but I’m so proud of what I accomplished. Winning silver has opened doors I never imagined, and I’m determined to go for gold next year!”

Worle Headteacher Mark Tidman said:

“Archie’s achievements are remarkable. He was an outstanding student and continues to inspire everyone with his hard work and dedication.”

While at WCSA, Archie was a trailblazer. As Eco President, he led initiatives like securing 100 plants for the school through the SEE MONSTER project and hosting a live podcast with Professor Richard Herrington.

He also chaired the Climate Justice Revolution, inspiring students and staff to prioritize sustainability.

Now studying landscaping in Preston, Archie is also addressing challenges within the industry.

He notes a lack of local apprenticeship opportunities, particularly for younger professionals:

“To be honest, the idea of an 18-year-old supervising a team feels unrealistic. We need more accessible pathways for young people to grow in this field.”
