The project began during Black History Month, when over 700 Ashton Park School pupils from Years 7, 8, and 9 took part in a design competition.

Their challenge? To create artwork that reflects inclusivity, celebrates their diverse school community, and fosters a sense of belonging.

Ruth Johnstone, Head of Visual Arts at Ashton Park School, said: “The students’ designs are the embodiment of the powerful conversations we had about identity, culture, and belonging. This mural is a celebration of who we are as a community.”

Eight winning designs were selected and combined into a bold and meaningful mural—and today, Ashton Park School students are joining forces with 12 UWE Bristol Illustration and Fine Art students to complete the artwork.

Among the university team are two former Ashton Park students, bringing the collaboration full circle.

Francesca Romita, UWE Bristol’s Civic and Community Engagement Team Leader, said: “We hope this partnership will inspire Ashton Park students to pursue Higher Education and see the incredible possibilities it can offer.”

The mural has been made possible through funding from the UWE Bristol Community Grant, thanks to a successful bid by second-year art student Grace Williams, with additional support from Ashton Park School.

Bristol City Council granted permission for the underpass transformation, which is expected to leave a lasting legacy in the community.
